Win an Exclusive Block from The Next Movement!

UPDATE!

Using the random number generator at Random.org and numbering the respondents chronologically by post date (1–16), we got a result of 13! That means … the winner is … Patrice Abrogoua!

Congratulations, Patrice!

We’re both so proud of this piece and are ecstatic that it could go to such a devoted fan.

Thanks so much for playing, everyone!

Dumperfoo and I have decided to put up one of our very cool “blocks,” made and signed by both of us, as a prize in a fun contest for The Next Movement! The canvas is 4 x 12 x 1.5 inches, with a background painted by Dumperfoo, a “The Roots” stamp made by me, and, yes, a real, varnished Polaroid (Type 779, to be exact). Only six have been made.

How can you win it? All you have to do is leave a comment letting us know these two things:

When did you start listening to The Roots?
What is your favorite song (or songs) by The Roots?

On Friday, April 29th at 12 PM MST, I will use a random number generator to pick out the winner. An email will go out to the winner and I’ll get the package ready to be shipped out (we’ll also cover shipping).

You may be thinking, “How do I get one of these cool blocks now?” Well, for any donations over $100, the donator will receive a block and a signed, 16 x 16, limited-edition print from one of the pieces in our show. We have created a Paypal account for an easy donation process:

Can’t wait to hear your responses!

  1. Hmmm. I first started listening to The Roots in '00 when Phrenology came out. I was graduating junior high school at the time and I was really into Incubus. Turns out that guitarist Ben Kenney would later join Incubus as their bassist.

I can't pick a single track but my favorite album is Things Fall Apart.

  2. I saw The Roots at the Electric Ballroom in Tempe in 1996. Still have the flyer. Then the same place in '97. Then a few years later at Club Rio with Goodie Mobb. Wow, it's been a long time.
    Favorite song is "Essaywhuman?!!!??!"

Seeing that live is a real groove creation.

  3. I started listening in 2000. The Roots took Hip-Hop to a higher and more profound level. My favorite song is "The Seed."

  4. First heard 'em on "Tha Basement" on BET, late nineties. Saw 'em at Rock the Bells. Best band on television.

  5. The first time I ever heard The Roots was when I helped a friend move into his new place. After setting up his sound system, we sound-checked with the title track off of Do You Want More?!!!??! and it rocked everything! The dishes off the counter, the pictures off the walls, etc. A few weeks later they opened for the Fugees at the Electric Ballroom. After seeing them perform live, I've been a fan ever since!

My favorite song(s)? That's virtually impossible, but I'm going to choose just one, "Swept Away." This track I saw performed live and, when I hear it, it takes me back down memory lane. WAIT! That's any track off of the first three albums…

  6. I don't even remember when I started listening to The Roots! Favorite song is "Somebody's Gotta Do It" off of The Tipping Point, "Somebody's gotta come up with a plan / And be there when the shit hits the fan." This World needs healing and somebody's gotta do it, We all gotta do our part<3

  7. First started listening in 1996. When I first heard them, I felt like I was finally hearing everything I had always wanted to hear that no one else was doing! Favorite song…. If I have to choose, it's "You Got Me" Quest's drum break at the end changed my life!

  8. Hmm, I really started listening to The Roots last year w/ the release of How I Got Over and Wake Up!

My fav track from The Roots is "Seed 2.0."

  9. I can't remember the first time I ever heard the roots, but the time that made me a lifelong fan was the debut of the "You Got Me" music vid. I was lucky enough to see them perform at the '02 Essence Music Festival, which sent me into stan-hood.

Fave song? Impossible to pick. But, "Complexity," the "Din Da Da" cover and "False Media" come to mind at first thought.

  10. I started to listen The Roots in junior high before basketball practice. Good times. "What They Do," "You Got Me" (ft. Erykah Badu), and, "Clones" were my favorites.

    I'm all about the ROOTS!!!

  11. I started listening to the roots when I took a copy of Organix home in college. It had just come out and I wanted to hear this new band from Philly…

My favorite (newish) song is "Lovely, Love My Family" — it just hits me right.
My favorite classic song would be "The Next Movement." I've gotten many a party started with that record. Maybe "Clones" too….

    Thanks for this opportunity!

  12. Well, I'm 21 years old now and the first time I heard some songs of The Roots I was around 14. So, I've been listening for a while.

  13. Damn, the paintings are super duper dope and The Roots are one of my favorite bands. Dumps, you are the man with the brushes, homie. Definitely, "THE NEXT MOVEMENT."
